Shirley Atkins

Shirley Atkins of Solon, Ohio, passed away Saturday, February 13, in
Ohio. Born in Cuba, NY in 1927; she was the daughter of the late Harold and Annie Scott, and was predeceased by her husband Sam Atkins. She graduated from Solon High School and earned a BA from Bowling Green Univ. and an MBA from Kent State Univ. Her love of children led her into a career of teaching. She taught for more than 20 years in Michigan, New York, Ohio, California and on the Pacific island of Okinawa. Shirley then volunteered as an original member of President Kennedy's Peace Corps. She served in Uganda, Africa, teaching in a school for boys in Ngora. After her return home, she continued sending school supplies to needy boys she had taught. When she retired from teaching, she became a Social Caseworker for the Cuyahoga County Dept. for Children & Family Services in Cleveland. The work she did enabled many children in foster care to get permanent adoptive homes. Although she did not have children of her own, she had a genuine love and compassion for all children of the world. She enjoyed being with friends in a social setting, had many international friends, and traveled to 62 countries. Shirley was a long-standing member of the Solon Community Church, where for over 30 years she sang in the choir. In later years, she wintered in Eustis, Florida. During her last year, she lived in Belgrade, Serbia, in the care of her niece, Jennifer, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy. Shirley is survived by a brother Glen Scott of Ligonier, PA, sisters Pat Brush of New Milford, CT, and Barbara Phillips of Cavendish, VT, in addition to nieces: Stephanie Brush of Prague, the Czech Republic; Jennifer Brush of Solon, Ohio and Belgrade, Serbia, Alison Barr of Proctorsville, VT, Carolyn Phillips of Hartford, CT, Chris O'Neil, of Hanover, NH, Meredith Blair, of New Fairfield, CT, and nephew Andrew Scott of Salzburg, PA.
The family also acknowledges Shirley's treasured long-time friend and colleague, Dottie Klemm. If desired, contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to a children's charity of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be held at Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon, at 12PM Saturday May 8.

John H. Staelens, Sr.

JOHN H. STAELENS, SR. age 82. Beloved husband of the late Marion; dear father of John H., Jr. of Savoy, MA and Deborah (Richard) Eifert, of Cleveland Hts., OH; loving grandfather of Gabrielle, John Henry, Joseph Staelens, and Caelyn Rosch. Services Wednesday April 21, 11AM at KINDRICH-McHUGH STEINBAUER FUNERAL HOME, 33375 BAINBRIDGE RD., SOLON, where family will visit with friends FROM 2-4:30 AND 6-7:30PM TUESDAY. Interment Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to VFW Foundation, VFW National Headquarters, 406 West 34th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.

Born (1928) & raised in Lawrence, MA. Began working at age 14.

Despite being unable to complete high school because of the need to support his family, he ended his career by working at a sophisticated computer programming and management position, making what would be a three figure salary in today's dollars. I cannot recall him ever missing a day of work in his life.

Lived in Lawrence from 1928 to the 1950's, lived in Salem NH in the early 1950's, then back to Lawrence in the late 50's, lived in Salem NH from 1969 to about 1990, lived in North Stratford, NH from about 1990 to 2004. In 2004, moved to Ohio to recover from a broken arm and be closer to family (Deborah). In North Stratford, he cut and stacked his on cordwood until he was in his seventies.

He married the girl next door, Marion Quereux, in 1948.

Worked as a senior project engineer/computer programmer for major companies, including Raytheon, GTE Sylvania, Digital Electronics Corporation.

Worked on the first mainframe, created by Raytheon - when computers used vacuum tubes, and a computer with less "brain" than a handheld calculator took an entire room to house.

He worked on NASA's first flight simulators for astronauts, and on a ballistic missile early warning system in Alaska for the Pentagon, and on programming for hydro-electric power plants in Brazil.

He was proud of his naval service in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

He narrowly missed being on board his assigned ship, the U.S.S. Hobson, when it sank after being torn in twain by a collision with the U.S.S. Wasp, in the U.S. Navy's worst ever "Friendly Fire" accident. My father was on shore leave to be with his pregnant wife at the time of the incident. His highest rank was Radioman Third Class. His electrician/communications training in the Navy is what led him into the computer realm.

He was an avid hunter and sharpshooter, and collected weapons - knives, bows, riflery and even a blowgun from Brazil. He was a lifelong N.R.A. member as well.

His parents were both from France originally, of Flemish origin - from the area which has at various times been part of France, part of Belgium, and part of the kingdom of Flanders. The name Staelens means "steel gate" or "steel fence posts" in Flemish; that is to say, tough and unyielding. He knew French for comprehension, although his parents would not allow him to speak it, because they wanted him to "be American, not French." He also became fluent in Portuguese, from a brief residency there in the early 1970's for work. Through my mother's family (who babysat him for their neighbors, the Staelens') he had some small amount of Italian comprehension.

He was proud that his two children were the first in the extended families' to obtain college degrees.

He died after a painful struggle with cancer, a week after his 82nd birthday.
