DOROTHY ANN "DOLL" LESLIE (NEE Smith), age 85, former resident of Solon for over 50 years, passed away at home March 8, 2010. Faith, Family, and a love for water and the sun would best describe Doll. She was a devout Catholic, whose Christian faith was most important in her life. A graduate of Ursuline Academy of the Sacred Heart, Ursuline College, and a member of St. Rita’s Church since 1952. CAROL A. ZURCA, age 65 of Bainbridge Twp. Died March 4, 2010. Shirley Atkins 82 of Solon, Ohio, passed away Saturday, February 13, in Ohio. Born in Cuba, NY; she was the daughter of the late Harold and Annie Scott, and was predeceased by her husband Sam Atkins. She graduated from Solon High School and earned a BA from Bowling Green Univ. and an MBA from Kent State Univ. Her love of children led her into a career of teaching. She taught for more than 20 years in Michigan, New York, Ohio and on the Pacific island of Okinawa. Shirley then volunteered as an original member of President Kennedy's Peace Corps. She served in Uganda, Africa, teaching in a school for boys in Ngora. After her return home, she continued sending school supplies to needy boys she had taught. When she retired from teaching, she became a Social Caseworker for the Cuyahoga County Dept. for Children & Family Services in Cleveland. The work she did enabled many children in foster care to get permanent adoptive homes. Although she did not have children of her own, she had a genuine love and compassion for all children of the world. She enjoyed being with friends in a social setting, had many international friends, and traveled to 62 countries. Shirley was a long-standing member of the Solon Community Church, where for over 30 years she sang in the choir. In later years, she wintered in Eustis, Florida. During her last year, she lived in Belgrade, Serbia, in the care of her niece, Jennifer, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy. Shirley is survived by a brother Glen Scott of Ligonier, PA, sisters Pat Brush of New Milford, CT, and Barbara Phillips of Cavendish, VT, in addition to nieces: Stephanie Brush of Prague, the Czech Republic; Jennifer Brush of Solon, Ohio and Belgrade, Serbia, Alison Barr of Proctorsville, VT, Carolyn Phillips of Hartford, CT, Chris O'Neil, of Hanover, NH, Meredith Blair, of New Fairfield, CT, and nephew Andrew Scott of Salzburg, PA. The family also acknowledges Shirley's treasured long-time friend and colleague, Dottie Klemm. If desired, contributions in Shirley's memory may be made to a children's charity of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be held in Solon in the Spring when the family is together.
JULIE MICHOS died at home in San Diego, CA, on February 18, 2010. She was born February 16, 1921 in Arkansas, the youngest of ten children. Although she dropped out of high school in her teens, she earned her high school diploma in 1962 by attending night school in Cleveland. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in English at Cleveland State University, submitting her thesis on her 69th birthday. That same year she and her husband, Paul, moved to San Diego. Julie had worked as an accredited medical records technician at Bedford and Marymount Hospitals. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Paul. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Charles Marvin of San Diego, her grandchildren and their spouses, Julie and Rick Randolph of Poway, CA; Mandy Marvin of Bedford, England; Sara and Clay Daniel of Charlottesville, VA; Matt and Brooke Marvin of Eureka, CA; her great-grandchildren Emily, Ian and Brandon Randolph, Knox Daniel, and Leo Marvin; a sister-in-law, Nan Milsap of Hot Springs, AR, and a niece and her husband, Karen and Tony Salamone of Brownsville, PA. Funeral services at KINDRICH-McHUGH STEINBAUER FUNERAL HOME, 33375 BAINBRIDGE ROAD, SOLON, Monday, March 1 at 10 AM where family will visit with friends ONE-HALF HOUR PRIOR TO SERVICES.
